Benefits of Singing 

Singing is a very healthy activity; it is really a perfect hobby for most. Joining our choir may give you that regular opportunity to enjoy singing while you get a chance to sing different kinds of music, and get to be around others who share your interest in music.  

"And did you know that joining a choir will also add greatly to your life; not just in a musical way.  We all know it makes us feel good and now science is discovering how singing can treat illnesses; even help prevent colds and flu." 

But while the feel-good, physical and mental health benefits of singing are well-documented, some put all sorts of hurdles in the way of singing.  They worry about singing in public or that they don’t have a nice or strong voice; that they can’t read music or that they will be the novice among an established group.  

But there is no need to worry. The challenges and joy of singing in a group may be just the push or lift you need. Singing is a wonderful release and opportunity to express yourself, your thoughts and feelings through music and singing.

In fact choral singing is said to act as a de-stresser and improve our sense of well-being.  So, the personal benefits we can get from group singing and its impact on communities are enormous.  “Results from the latest research support the findings that adult choral singers exhibit increased social skills, civic involvement, volunteerism, philanthropy and support of other art forms compared with non-singers.”

Join Our Choir

Singing in our choir is an enjoyable experience; but being a member of Enniscorthy Choral Society does require a commitment of time, effort and dedication.

There are a few points that existing members, newcomers and prospective members should keep in their mind.
  • Attend Rehearsals - every choir member should be on time and present at the start of every rehearsal, so that the rehearsal time allocated is productive.  Attendance is a part of the assessment process.
  • Learn and Practice your Music – choristers are expected to learn and practice their individual music parts at home.
  • Follow the Music Director – The music director is the team coach.  He is the leader and his expertise, knowledge and guidance direct the choir to communicate the music in a certain way.  It is vital that each member keep their eyes on him and follow his instructions. 
  • Listen and Sing as One – They say that singing is 90% listening and 10% singing. When you sing in a choir, it is important that your voice blends with the other member of your section, while also listening to the other voice sections.  No one voice should be heard above the other and this means blending the same notes at the same tone, with the same inflections at the right time with the person beside you.  It’s all about the group singing as once voice. 
  • Breathe & Stand Correctly- Learning to breathe properly from the diaphragm and maintain an upright relaxed posture allows a singer to sing the notes at the right pitch in a controlled, sustained and smooth manner.  It also gives confidence and relaxes the singer.
  • Enjoy the Music - Feeling the music cannot be taught. It is an emotion the chorister must develop themselves when singing the phrase or piece of music.  After all music is about communicating with your audience.
